This book starts where most other books on watches finish, in 1800, and covers in dept a wide spectrum of the pocket watches produced up to 1940. The author explains in clear, uncomplicated language precisely what to look out for and, of equal importance, what to avoid. He does not confine himself to unobtainable or outrageously expensive «museum» examples, but prefers to concentrate on affordable watches which may still be readily found on the open market. The thirty-two colour plates and over a thousand black and white plates, mostly previously unpublished, illustrate movements and cases as well as the watch dials. Every effort has been made to make the selection as representative as possible with examples from late verge to alarm and novelty watches. Everything the reader could ever want to know about pocket watches, whether English, American or Continental, is contained within these pages.
